What Shapes Us & Who We Become: An Islamic Psychology Perspective

Who are we really?

And what shapes the kind of person we become?

Is it all nature? Or is it all nurture?

Secular personality theories answers these questions through concepts of traits, schemas and neurobiological dispositions. While Islam answers them through the fitrah, the nafs, the qalb and the transformative potential of the human being through a relationship with Allah.

In our upcoming Solace Fortnightly Webinar, Sr. Mohsinah Shaikh will offer a systematic framework of Islamic personality theory alongside a critical engagement with well-known secular personality models to understand ourselves deeper and better.

Key objectives:

By the end of this webinar, participants will:

  • Understand the Islamic framework of personality

  • Explore the three Quranic stages of the self as a developmental model of character and psychological growth.

  • Critically engage with secular models including the Big Five, psychoanalytic models and humanistic psychology.

  • Examine Tazkiyah al-nafs (purification of the self) as both a spiritual obligation and a psychological process.

  • Reflect on Islamic virtues like Sabr (patience), Shukr (gratitude), Tawadu’ (humility), Tawakkul (reliance on Allah) and Ikhlas (sincerity) as traits with measurable psychological importance.

Who is it for?

  • Individuals wanting to understand their own character, patterns, and personal development through an Islamic lens.

  • Muslims who sense that mainstream self-help and personality frameworks do not quite reach the depth their tradition points toward.

  • Students of psychology, counseling, or Islamic studies seeking an Islamic framework for understanding human personality.

  • Therapists, counselors, coaches, and community workers wanting to bring Islamic psychological concepts meaningfully into their practice.

  • Educators, youth workers and community leaders.

What is Islam & Psychology Fortnightly?

The rate at which the impact of secular psychology is expanding is unprecedented in this digital age. Every other person, channel, and platform promotes and advocates ideas for solving life problems. However, the assumptions and the principles bombarded upon us are flawed and twisted. Consequently, it makes us question the degree to which we should apply it in our lives, as much of the advice being showered upon us does not meet Islamic values. Thus, bridging this gap between the modern discourse on psychology and Islamic principles has become the urgent need of the hour.

This is where ‘Islam & Psychology Fortnightly’ comes in!

The integration of Islamic values with contemporary psychology practices makes Solace unique in this field. With this exclusively curated fortnightly webinar series, you can deepen your understanding of key psychological issues and concerns, and learn how these can be navigated on a day-to-day basis without compromising your religious values.
