HOW TO PRESERVE YOUR MENTAL HEALTH IN RAMADAN?

Has this happened to you?

You are all excited for Ramadan and welcome it on a high note!

You have made your goals and are looking forward to achieving them all.

But then comes a slump – For some after a week, for others, later.

And one is left wondering as to what exactly happened

Demotivation kicks in and you spend the remainder of the days lamenting over everything that did not go well.

Relatable?

But what if this can be avoided? What if you can protect your peace of mind, heart, and soul by paying attention to some fundamentals?

We are listing these below and pray that this helps you in some way to make this Ramadan different and better.

  1. Process Over Progress – We are a nation of efforts and not outcomes. When we focus on outcomes, we lose focus on what truly matters – the joy of the process.

What can you do to focus more on the process?

Perhaps, find ways to increase your khushu little by little?

  1. Your Circumstances Are Like No Other – Ramadan looks different for every person. When we compare our deeds with those of others, we often feel our actions are insufficient.

What can you do to reduce this comparison? Perhaps unfollow influencers that flaunt their ibadah?

  1. Quality Over Quantity – Ramadan is not a hustle to do more and more. Let us free our Ibadah from the culture of hustle and invite barakah into our lives by doing every little act with ihsan (excellence).

What can you do to get out of this hustle? Perhaps, revise your goals into barakah-oriented ones?

  1. Striking Tawazun (Balance) – We are Ummat-e Wast (Middle nation). We are supposed to avoid extremes in all matters. All problems arise when we shift the balance and focus on one aspect more than needed. All aspects of ourselves- body, mind, heart, and soul need to be taken care of properly for a healthy state of being.

What can you do to strike this balance a little better? Which aspect needs your attention more?

  1. Find Your Ghar-e-Hira – Ramadan is an individual affair as much as it is a community affair. It is a time of reflection, contemplation, and supplication. A time to spend time with Allah SWT in seclusion (even if it is for 10 minutes).

How can you include this silent solitude time in your routine? Perhaps, when everyone is asleep, you pour your heart out to Allah SWT?

  1. Circle of Control Versus Circle Of Concern – No matter how much you plan, there is a possibility that things will not go as expected. For example: Surprise guests, or a sickness. Know that nothing happens without the Will of Allah SWT. You cannot control everything and the things that are not in your control should not become your concern.

What can you do today to shift your mindset toward things that you can control? Perhaps using the unexpected events as a source of revising your intentions?

As Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “Do good deeds properly, sincerely, and moderately and know that your deeds will not make you enter Paradise and that the most beloved deed to Allah is the most regular and constant even if it were little.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)
