Solace Workshop - Understanding and Healing from Domestic Abuse
A Journey towards Awareness, Safety, and Dignity – A 2-day Workshop with Hannah Morris.
Domestic abuse is an issue that affects families across all communities, yet it can remain hidden behind closed doors, particularly where stigma, cultural expectations, and misunderstandings about religion make it difficult to recognize or speak about. This workshop introduces the complex realities of domestic abuse within Muslim families, exploring what abuse can look like beyond physical violence, why it may remain hidden, and how Islamic teachings and psychological understanding can help us recognise and respond to it with greater compassion and awareness.
Through an exploration of coercive control, the psychological impact of abuse, and the challenges that can make leaving or seeking support difficult, we will begin to unpack some of the misconceptions surrounding domestic abuse and consider how families, friends and communities can offer meaningful support. Whether you have personal experience, support someone affected by abuse, or simply wish to develop a deeper understanding of this important issue, this workshop offers an opportunity to reflect, learn and begin breaking the silence.
Workshop Objectives:
By the end of the two-day workshop, participants will be able to:
- Recognize the different forms and patterns of domestic abuse, including coercive control and non-physical forms of abuse.
- Explore the psychological, social, cultural and religious factors that can contribute to abuse remaining hidden and make seeking support or leaving difficult.
- Develop a deeper understanding of Islamic perspectives on marriage, harm, rights and responsibilities, and consider how religious teachings may be misunderstood or misused in the context of abuse.
- Understand some of the psychological impacts of domestic abuse, including trauma, fear, shame, isolation and loss of agency.
- Identify supportive and unhelpful responses when working with or supporting someone experiencing domestic abuse, with particular consideration for the needs and circumstances of Muslim families.
